My daughter likes to collect change, and she loves to play with my wallet. Rather than continuing to have my actual, valuable debit card and other items scattered into various black holes around our house, we have now outfitted her with some sample credit cards, her daddy’s business cards, and some play money found at a yard sale. Logically, then, she needed a wallet.

I started turning this idea ’round in my head as far as how to put it together when I happened on this post by Lola Nova, who took so much of the guesswork out of it for me. We headed off to the fabric store, where my daughter picked out three fabrics that she liked. I used Lola Nova’s tutorial and made my own modifications to add a zipper pocket on the back of the wallet. (That zipper, my first, was so not as scary as I thought it would be!)

The top stitching is a little wonky in places, my ribbon loop ended up off center, and so on. I was working on it quite late at night, and I was zipping along really well until I ran into one tiny snafu that led to a series of little mistakes. Nevertheless, I like it so much I’m considering making another for myself.

And fortunately, my daughter doesn’t care about the imperfections one bit. We loaded it up with her goodies right away. She looked at it and said, “That’s really pretty, Mommy,” and she’s been carrying it around all day.
