Prisms

Since I began embroidering a year and a half(ish) ago, I have amassed quite a collection of embroidery floss. It started innocently enough, with a few skeins bought here and there for specific projects. Then several family members asked for gift ideas for Christmas and birthday, and it was casually mentioned that I could always use more floss, in any color. As a result, the amount of floss I’ve accrued has far exceeded my current storage capacity.

I’d taken to tossing the skeins into a drawer with complete abandon because I had no way of organizing them. It was getting ridiculously difficult to even see what colors I had. Discovering my children and the kitten dragging skeins across the floor, happily unravelling them as they went, led me to finally invest in some more ArtBin Prism boxes.

They are exactly the right size for skeins of floss (I don’t like to wrap them on cards), and I can arrange the various colors any way I please with the divided compartments.

I am happy to announce that the runaway floss has now been contained, and there is plenty of room for more flossy goodness to come. All organizational satisfaction aside, though, they also look so darn pretty that I can’t stop staring at them!

Is it sick that the sight of all that pretty floss arranged in their colour groups fills me with a sense of happiness and calm? :-)

Please don’t tell me you’ve only been embroidering for a year and a half! I thought you’d been doing it for at least a lifetime to get that good :) – ah well, back to the drawing board!

    Great storage idea :)

Sorry, Alison, but it’s true! I am new to embroidery, but I have been drawing (and painting) most of my life, and I think for me the embroidery is just an extension of those things. :)

what do you do with your scraps of floss that are too long to discard? do you just put them back in their respective drawer?

Beth, I thread them through one of the ends of the appropriate skein, tie a half knot, and either leave it at that or wrap it around the skein if it’s really long.

Page, the ArtBin Prism boxes that I have are the ones with six compartments. I think if you click the link in my post, it should take you to the ArtBin site and jump you directly to that particular box/style. Hope that helps, and good luck with the embroidery!
