My son is not sleeping well. Again. Or maybe I shouldn’t say “again,” because he hasn’t really slept well for the last five or six months. What happened to my good sleeper who would go right to sleep the second I patted his back?
Ah, well, as many of you know, this is life with babies. Some day he will figure out how to sleep and I’ll feel a little more sane. In the meantime, I am often to be found sitting in dark rooms trying to get, or keep, him asleep. What it really means is that the productivity in my creative space is just a bit—ok, a lot—snail-ish at the moment.
Since I can’t really be at the sewing machine or sitting in the bright light I need for embroidery, but I can usually get away with computer work, I decided I’m going to take advantage of this time to get caught up on some much-put-off blog reading and commenting. Maybe that will right some sort of unbalanced something and I’ll get some more needle time later. (Ha!)
Anyway. Here’s what I have managed to squeeze in this week.
My Eiffel Tower, inspired by the fabric you see beneath it, has been turned into a finished piece. I have some other fabric and ribbon that goes perfectly with it, and it’s all being bundled up to await its day in the sun. Hint: It has to do with my eventual shop opening. It’s nothing fancy, just some black floss and a quick drawing sketched directly onto white muslin, but I like it a lot.
Also in preparation for the shop, I’ve created some custom tags for my pieces. Here you can see one all tied up around a packaged sachet, ready to be sent off to its new home.
The cloud is printed with a hand-carved stamp (the same one you see in my banner). I originally printed the whole thing on a rectangular piece of card stock, which will work nicely for business cards, but I decided for the tag I needed to cut out the cloud shape. I’m glad I did. I like the effect. Now I just need some practice with the X-Acto to get a little smoother at the cutting-out bit.
Next I’m moving on to mounting some embroidered pieces as frameable “art” and hopefully getting the procrastinated dollhouse pattern put together. Onward I creep! (More inspiring spaces at kootoyoo.)
(Of course, now I’ve got an almost dead battery. That may interfere with my plans. *sigh*)

ah the lovely embroidery…hang in there with the sleep issues

written on October 15th, 2009, at 1:22 amSomeone said to me that the good thing about housework is that it will always be there tomorrow waiting for you. I guess the same can be applied to craft can’t it? It works around your needs too and will always be waiting for you tomorrow.
It may be a slow space but it’s still a beautiful productive one. Your new tags are very effective, I really like the cloud shape

written on October 15th, 2009, at 3:41 amYup, the sleep thing…it’s a tough time. Your little bit of French stitchery is lovely.
written on October 15th, 2009, at 4:37 amOh Gretchen, my heart is aching for you and the sleep problems. It makes everyday life so hard when you are so tired it hurts. Hang in there and know you are not alone. xxx
written on October 15th, 2009, at 5:17 amOh, you are doing fantastic, while looking after little ones! Both of mine were pretty poor ‘sleepers’ – I know what it’s like! Can make you feel pretty insane from what I remember too! I love all your labels, packaging – looking great, as is the lovely embroidery :D
written on October 15th, 2009, at 8:27 amThat embroidery looks fantastic. I hope the sleeping gets better. I can completely relate. When I finally do get a good nights sleep I may go into shock. :)
written on October 15th, 2009, at 10:53 amLittle people that don’t sleep – I have one of those so you have my sympathy. Your stitchery is lovely and the cloud tags are fabulous.
written on October 15th, 2009, at 4:14 pmI am so smitten with your Eiffel Tower embroidery, it is awesome! I think you are doing great!
Oh, I know all about the sleepless phases. I can’t manage sewing around my 4 year old, her hands are in everything, she is a hurricane of activity. Usually, by the time she’s down to sleep I am too wiped out to work. I also know from experience that when I look back I will not remember how little I accomplished in my work, but rather the wonderful things about being a mom. I feel for you.
written on October 15th, 2009, at 6:17 pmThat is very lovely stitching. I’ve got similar Eiffel Tower fabric that I’ve been tempted to stitch on.
written on October 15th, 2009, at 8:09 pmGood luck with your son! It’s such a hard time but thankfully doesn’t last forever. I love your Eiffel embroidery – just gorgeous :) K

Can’t wait to see what you stock in your shop. Looking forward to its opening. I love the eiffel tower ~ a beautiful capture.
written on October 16th, 2009, at 7:24 amI can certainly relate to the children waking up at night and interrupting our creative time. My little one is 4 and it is just in the past months when she has consistently slept nightly without waking multiple times!!! It has been so tiring to be on constant duty all day and then into the night. I am so grateful that she is sleeping better now. I hope yours will soon be out of this tiresome phase too so you can resume crafting! Your little cloud tags are so original and pretty! Looking forward to seeing your shop. The eiffel tower is beautiful!
