I haven’t been able to show you a lot of what I’ve been making the last few weeks since pretty much all of it is for Christmas gifts. I promise I will show you all of the goods after the gifts have been received, but for now I do have one thing I can write about.
We have a little friend who has a birthday soon. I wasn’t sure what to get for him, since I know his mom has been cleaning out their toy selection and he will be receiving new things for Christmas. I thought a gift card might be fun for him, so he can pick out his own gift and feel a little grown up paying for it himself. But I didn’t want to just give him a boring old gift card, either.
So I decided to whip up a little wallet to hold the gift card and that he can use for whatever it is that three-year-olds like to carry around in wallets. (In our house that includes play money, Chuck E. Cheese tokens, Daddy’s business cards, folded up drawings, hair clips, and more.)
I made this in similar fashion to the one I made for my daughter. The main difference in this one is that I didn’t have a zipper on hand for the change pocket. I did happen to have matching velcro, though, so I made some alterations to the change pocket. That included figuring out how to add a flap for closure, which tested my overly tired mom brain a bit, but it worked out. Oh, and I didn’t intend to place the pocket on the front of the wallet—that was a mistake—but now I rather like it that way.
I totally winged it, and considering that fact, I’m pleased to report that it wasn’t an utter disaster. I’m not completely happy with it, because I think I probably could have done it better, but not being experienced in wallet-making and not using a pattern at all, I think it’s pretty okay. :)
The outside is made from a navy blue twill that I have used for multiple projects, including a baby sling and a drawstring backpack. The inside pockets are made of coordinating cotton fabrics.
Despite totally making this up as I went, it came together pretty quickly—and it’s a good thing, since I am meant to present the gift to our little friend in two days! What’s that? A by-the-seat-of-her-pants project that whipped up quickly with no disasters? It must be a Christmas miracle!
And speaking of Christmas, next week I’ll be sharing some Christmas-themed posts (quite possibly not on my “usual” posting schedule), things that have to do with my preparations for the holidays and some of the small ways, other than gifts, that we do the Handmade Holiday bit. I can’t believe we’re only 9 days away! Fa-la-la-la-la!

I think it looks great! Good idea with the velcro pocket.

written on December 16th, 2009, at 4:00 pmThat turned out great! Velcro is a nice option — easier for cold hands than a zipper :).
