Yes, sorry, still more sketchbook shots….
This year we’ve made changes to our diet so that the majority of it consists of fresh, whole foods and much less packaged and processed items. (I even made my own ravioli!) It’s also 95% vegetarian. After last year’s embarrassingly lazy and unhealthy eating, I’ve been craving healthier foods, and we figured cooking vegetarian meals is a way to ensure we’re getting veggies and other good things we might not normally include in our meals. (Besides that, research shows that animal fats and proteins just aren’t great for us.)
I don’t want to “fake” meats; I don’t really understand the point of that. (Why call it “vegetarian meatloaf” when it’s actually a cottage cheese roast? Or “vegetarian chicken and dumplings” when it’s actually a really yummy vegetable stew with dumplings?) Instead, I just want to make good things to eat instead of meat, and in the process we’re discovering a lot of delicious new things we hadn’t tried before. We’re not strict about it, because this isn’t a moral issue for us, but we’ve found it surprisingly easy and inexpensive to maintain this new diet, so I think it’s here to stay.
Something about that fresh produce and the healthy foods has made cooking more enjoyable for me. Trying new recipes has become fun, and I actually look forward to dinner more! And I think this might be the start of a new sketchbook, too. The other day I just felt inspired to sketch what we ate and how we made it.
Funny, I’ve never been much of a sketchbook-keeper, but now I’ve got three going at once, and I sort of like it. Time will tell if that continues. Meanwhile, I’ll be eating good!

The recipes in visual form are pretty cool. They’ll make a great “off-to-college” gift some day.
written on February 22nd, 2012, at 8:48 pmI love this! I resolved this year to get my kitchen mojo back. A sketchbook would for sure add to the fun.

written on February 23rd, 2012, at 6:28 amI would so much love to start eating more healthy. The problem is my kitchen that I share. No matter how much I try to treat it as my own, it somehow doesn’t feel like I can do anything I’d like there… I really would love to eat more vegetarian food, just because it’s more delicious :)

written on February 23rd, 2012, at 5:24 pmI was just wondering if you use(d) any resources to hone in on your sketching/doodling technique? — I love simple doodles like this, but for whatever reason (while I am an artist), have a hard time making them!
Love it!
