I occasionally use Illustration Friday for drawing prompts, and recently I did a sketch for the theme “edge.” Once I’d gotten the pencil work done, I couldn’t decide how I wanted to color it. Watercolor? Pencil? Marker? Digital? (And if digital, which medium, as I still use traditional techniques on digital drawings?)
Normally my attention span wanes once I’m close to completing a picture, so I need to just pick a medium and go. But this time I felt like doing a little comparison. I made multiple copies of the sketch and spent some time playing around. These were all done quickly (read: not too carefully) so that I wouldn’t lose interest, but I think you can get the general idea of each medium. (If you care to, you can see larger versions of each one on my flickr page.)
1. Watercolor and graphite (grayscale)
2. Watercolor and graphite
3. Sepia ink and colored pencil
4. Digital (watercolor and pencil)
5. Black ink, Tombow marker
6. Colored pencil
My lack of expertise with certain of the media definitely shows, and I still have my preferred tools, but it was a fun little experiment. I like parts of each of them, and in the end, I’m not really sure which one I like best. Which is your favorite?

Absolutely terrific! Love this little lady! Wow – do I have to choose? Well, I think my first choice is six. She looks tweedy…. or maybe I can just relate to tweedy more personally. (ha) A close second is four – love the coloring and detail – yes, the detail. There you go – inspiring me again!! Very glad to see cool things from your drawing table. Keep it up!

I think I actually like the first one best but I appreciate the others, as a collective.

written on January 30th, 2013, at 12:56 pmIt’s so interesting to see the image on different mediums! I am nuts about watercolour so I love that one but I absolutely love the digital watercolour and pen… the shadowing effect is fab and adds more definition to the image! It’s great to see you have your creative mojo back!!! YAY! :)
