about me

Hi! My name is Gretchen. I am a 30-something wife and stay-at-home mother to two amazing children. In previous “lives” I have been an editor (book publishing) and a receptionist at a dental office, but I like my current job much better.

When I take personality quizzes, in which one is supposed to fit into certain categories but not others, I always come out equally divided between all categories. I annoy the test-givers. It does explain, though, why I am both highly organized/logical and highly creative/random. My left and right brains like playing together!

I especially like when my brains come together to help me make things. My crafting time is like an oasis, a welcome pause in the midst of the non-stop business of raising small children. It is like a nice, deep sigh.

I have been crocheting and doing other creative things, like drawing and painting, since I was very young, and I also knit (quite well) and sew (a bit well). My current passions, though, are embroidery and stamp carving, which is new to me. I’d like to eventually get more practice at the stamp carving, as well as begin to learn watercolor painting and screen printing. As you can see, I am a bit of a Jane of all trades!

Some other random things about me OR A few of my favorite things:

I have always liked the color red, but my favorites are green and yellow. I love the scent of oranges and lemons, lilacs, and baking bread. I like small things and “things to put things in” (bags, boxes, what have you). I am obsessed with houses–layouts, designs, miniatures. I am a big fan of flowers: daisies, hydrangeas, poppies, and tulips, just to name a few. My favorite “herbs” are lavender and lemon thyme. I like walking in the rain, but I really love a bright, light-filled day, a green grass day. I cannot resist cookies or Dr Pepper. I like to read Shakespeare and Tolstoy. I also like chick lit and magazines. My favorite instrument is the violin. I like to take walks, and I like swimming pools. Summer is my favorite season, but I’m also a sucker for the crisp crunch of Autumn. I like words, and I often use too many of them, even after much self-editing.

And if you just haven’t had enough (ha!), you can read an interview with me here.
