Just a few more quickie sketches, playing around. It was a very windy day, and wind—the kind that knocks things over and the kind that comes from flying along down the road—turned into my starting point. Hoping to get a few things wrapped up this week….
Last night, while taking a break from more serious work, I made a very fast pencil sketch that came out in a style a bit different from what I’ve always done. I also did some fast, loose watercolor, again a little different from the usual. This is interesting to me, because normally, even when I am just “flowing,” with no thought put into the result, I get a very specific outcome. (And, to be honest, what my art looks like and what I want it to look like are sometimes two different things.)
This little sketch is definitely influenced by other artwork I’ve admired—I can see it. I do sometimes mimic another artist’s style in order to learn specific techniques, but there was no thought of that last night. I haven’t even been looking at other artwork recently, although I’m sure everything I’ve seen in the past has lodged in the dark recesses of my creative memory somewhere. Regardless, this just came out all on its own, similar or not, and that’s not happened before.
I think the reason I find this so interesting is because I often feel that my current output just doesn’t quite match up to the vague creative yearnings in my head. I am definitely still on a journey of creative discovery, so when something unusual makes an appearance, I take notice. I wonder how this little blip will influence what comes next. Was it just a one-off occasion or will it surface again? I sort of hope it does, even just as a starting point, because I think I like it.
